Shopify “Shipping Rate” not appearing at Checkout (Weight vs. Zone Error)

When a customer enters their delivery address at checkout and encounters the message, “This order can’t be shipped to your address,” or finds the shipping method list completely empty, Shopify cannot match the cart’s contents to an active shipping profile.

This error occurs when the destination country is missing from your active shipping zones, cart weight or cart value falls into an unconfigured gap between rate tiers, or items in the cart are divided across multiple shipping profiles with incompatible fulfillment rules.

Why are shipping rates not showing at Shopify checkout?

Shipping rates fail to appear at Shopify checkout when the customer’s delivery destination is not assigned to an active shipping zone, the cart’s total weight or price falls into an unconfigured gap between condition tiers, or products in the cart belong to separate shipping profiles that do not share a matching carrier service.

How Shopify Evaluates Shipping Rates at Checkout

To determine which rates appear, Shopify runs the cart through a sequential filter:

[Customer Address Entered]
             │
├── 1. Does the country/state belong to an active Shipping Zone?
│ ├── NO ──> ERROR: No rates available.
             │ └── YES ──> Move to Step 2.
             │
├── 2. Do ALL cart items have an assigned rate in this zone?
│ ├── NO ──> ERROR: Profile clash (No shared rate).
             │ └── YES ──> Move to Step 3.
             │
└── 3. Does total cart Weight or Price fit into a configured tier?
├── NO ──> TIER GAP: Weight falls between ranges.
└── YES ──> RATES DISPLAY CLEANLY.

If any condition in this sequence returns “NO”, the checkout engine halts rate calculation.

Root Causes and Step-by-Step Fixes

1. Weight Tier Gaps in Condition-Based Rates

When configuring manual weight-based shipping rates, merchants frequently introduce accidental gaps between weight tiers:

  • Standard Shipping: 0 lb to 5.0 lb = $5.00
  • Heavy Shipping: 5.1 lb to 20.0 lb = $12.00

If a customer adds items totaling 5.05 lb, Shopify has no rate defined for that exact weight. The checkout engine returns no available rates.

The Fix:

  1. Navigate to Shopify Admin > Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. Click General shipping rates (or your active custom profile).
  3. Find the affected shipping zone and inspect your condition-based rates.
  4. Ensure the upper bound of one tier matches the lower bound of the next tier:
    • Tier 1: 0 lb to 5.0 lb
    • Tier 2: 5.0 lb to 20.0 lb
  5. Shopify handles identical boundaries automatically without double-charging.
  6. Verify that your heaviest tier has no maximum limit (leave the maximum weight field empty) so oversized orders never exceed your rate table.

2. Default Package Tare Weight Inflating the Total Cart Weight

Every Shopify store has a Default package setting. Shopify automatically adds the weight of this default box to the product weights of the cart.

If a product weighs 4.8 lb and your default box weighs 0.5 lb:
Total Cart Weight = 4.8 lb + 0.5 lb = 5.3 lb

If your shipping rate table capped your tier at 5.0 lb, this additional box weight pushes the cart into an unconfigured range, triggering an error.

The Fix:

  1. In Settings > Shipping and delivery, scroll down to Saved packages.
  2. Check the package marked as Default.
  3. Inspect the Weight assigned to that package.
  4. If you have already factored packing material into your individual product weights, adjust the default package weight to 0.0 lb or widen your shipping rate tiers to absorb the tare weight.

3. Missing Regions, States, or Postcodes in Shipping Zones

A country may be listed inside a shipping zone, but specific regional subdivisions (states, provinces, or territories) might be unchecked. For example, a store shipping to the United States may have the continental states checked, but Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or military APO/FPO addresses unchecked.

The Fix:

  1. In Settings > Shipping and delivery, click into the relevant profile.
  2. Under the destination zone, click the three dots (…) > Edit zone.
  3. Search for the customer’s country.
  4. Click the small arrow to expand the country’s sub-regions.
  5. Verify that all target provinces, states, and territories are checked.
  6. Click Done and Save.

4. Products Split Across Incompatible Shipping Profiles

When products are assigned to different shipping profiles (e.g., “General Profile” for small apparel vs. “Fragile Profile” for glassware):

  • Shopify evaluates both profiles when both items are in the cart.
  • It attempts to combine the shipping options.
  • If Profile A only offers a flat rate called Standard Ground and Profile B only offers carrier-calculated FedEx Express, Shopify cannot reconcile the two different service levels.
  • If rate combination fails or exceeds customer eligibility, no shipping rate appears.

The Fix:

  1. In Settings > Shipping and delivery, inspect your custom profiles.
  2. If two profiles must be used simultaneously, ensure both profiles contain identically named manual rates (e.g., both contain a rate named Standard Shipping).
  3. When rate names match across profiles, Shopify combines them at checkout cleanly, adding their respective costs together.
  4. Whenever possible, consolidate products into a single General shipping rates profile and manage pricing tiers through weight, rather than maintaining multiple isolated profiles.

5. Multi-Location Inventory Routing Failures

If you fulfill from multiple locations or warehouses and an item in the cart is only stocked at Location B, but Location B has no assigned shipping rates for that customer’s zone, checkout fails.

The Fix:

  1. Open Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  2. Under each shipping profile, scroll to the Shipping from card.
  3. Verify that all active retail stores and fulfillment centers holding inventory are listed as active fulfillment locations.
  4. If a location is marked “Not shipping to some zones,” click Show details and assign rates to cover that warehouse’s delivery reach.
  5. If inventory allocations are showing zero despite warehouse stock being present, follow How to Resolve: Shopify “Inventory Out of Sync” between Locations.

Diagnostic Test Procedure

To verify your rates before sending customers back to checkout:

  1. Open a new private browsing window.
  2. Add the exact items the customer attempted to purchase to your cart.
  3. Proceed to checkout and enter the customer’s exact city, state/province, and postal code.
  4. If rates populate, the customer entered an invalid postal code format or typo.
  5. If rates do not populate, increase or decrease the quantity of items by one. If rates suddenly appear, you have confirmed a Weight Tier Gap. Adjust your upper and lower tier limits in shipping settings to eliminate the gap.
